Digital nomads, remote workers, WFH warriors…same thing, right? Ehhhh, no. Elizabeth Thorn spoke to 🧚🏻♀️ Rowena (Ro) Hennigan to set the record straight, and it turns out tossing everyone with a Wi-Fi connection into the same bucket is a big mistake. Why? Because these distinctions actually matter, especially if you’re serious about building and running your remote team like a pro.  Here’s a lil TLDR: 💻 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐬: They work from anywhere…as long as there’s decent Wi-Fi and (more often than not) a beach nearby.   🏠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦-𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞: Cozy setups, maybe, but not necessarily tied to a remote-first mindset.   🌎 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬: These are fully distributed teams working across time zones (like we do at Toggl). Still think it’s just semantics? As you can see, there’s so much more to it, and Ro explains it all in-depth in the full interview, as well as 𝘸𝘩𝘺 recognizing these differences is critical for sustaining successful remote operations. Did the pandemic give everyone a masterclass in remote work…or just a crash course in conference call chaos? 🫠 🧚🏻♀️ Rowena (Ro) Hennigan, remote operations specialist extraordinaire (yes, she’s that good), thinks we’ve barely scratched the surface of what true remote work can do or even what it looks like. Whether helping teams unlock workforce inclusion or build efficient, globally distributed teams that are more innovative and productive, Ro breaks down how remote work is way more than a pandemic-era survival kit. $10M+ in agency profit since 2020. Follow to build a more profitable agency.

Most agency owners can’t fathom charging $45,000/month. Even fewer can imagine dropping prices $37,000/month from there. We did. And here’s why it’s the best decision I’ve made: In 2021, the tech market was ripping and money was cheap. Agency spending was at an all-time high. We had some clients in the 6-figure per month range, with our lowest being above $40K/month in fees. The good old days. Coming from someone who started out charging a mere $2,500 a month, I felt like we had made it. But post-market downturn, everything shifted. Despite Matter Made’s track record of delivering impeccable results, there simply wasn’t budget to pay an agency $100K+/month in fees. It was emblematic of how businesses were, and still are, prioritizing cost-cutting and efficiency over growth at all costs. So I had two choices. 1. Sit on a high horse and hold firm. 2. Lower it. We chose the latter and restructured our service delivery model while gradually lowering pricing until the market started responding. In a span of 10 days post-pricing change, we closed 3 deals worth $540K that had been stuck in our pipeline for months. Is it the sexy $45K/month we used to charge? No. In fact, Matter Made’s pricing now starts at just $10k/mo. But we set our deal structure up so that when deliver results, our fees grow too. There’s potential to double or triple within the first 6 months of an engagement – but only when our clients are winning. Lowering prices doesn’t mean lowering your worth. Price sensitivity is charging what the market is willing to pay for and letting the results do the rest. P.S. I did a full interview with Toggl on this exact topic and how to run a profitable agency. Have you been serious about tracking your time? I used to be pretty horrible at it. But, that’s not sustainable! As a business owner, your time is LITERALLY money. How are you (or I) going to learn how to delegate & offload tasks if we don’t even know which ones are taking the most time? That’s why I’ve been using Toggl so much: → You can sort your work by client/project → You can add tags (like “content” or “admin”) to see how long certain types of work take you. → You can use that as a reference, so when you start offloading tasks, you know how long they really take. Plus it’s free, so that’s awesome. (P.S. NOT an ad. Just been loving this.) It can be a pain to remember to switch it on and off (I have left it running overnight LOL), but it’s worth it. If you really want ownership of your time, you have to know how that time is being spent. And, if you’re spending too much time ideating and executing your content… You know a girl! ;)

Head of Customer Lifecycle at Order Desk

Over the weekend, I finally signed up for Toggl  something I’ve been meaning to try forever and wow, I wish I’d done it sooner. 😅 In my role as Head of Customer Lifecycle at Order Desk Desk I’m constantly juggling a million moving parts. It can feel like my day disappears before I’ve had a chance to see where it went. Toggl made time feel visible. Just hitting “start” on a task helped me focus, and stopping it gave me this weirdly satisfying snapshot of how my day unfolded. It wasn’t about being more productive, it was about being more aware. And honestly? That small shift made me smile. Curious to see if anyone else tried something recently that just made life a bit easier?

How does an agency not only survive, but thrive, after a decade in business? 🤔 In the final episode of our 📺 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 series, Kim sat down with Beth Trejo, Founder + CEO of Chatterkick—a social media agency that's been around for over 13 years. The discussion got into the weeds about what it takes 👇 👩💻 Why the agency built a team of deep generalists vs platform-specific specialists to service clients 🌴 Using ‘responsible time-off’ to develop autonomy and accountability 🤝 Being transparent with the team (so they understand decisions) If you manage an agency that offers multiple services with a lean team, this one is for you.
